The less paint, the less overall costs. I took the Boeing Factory tour a few months back in Seattle, and they told us a little bit about the paint of aircraft. Although the thickness of the paint is about the same as 3 stacked sheets of paper, that will really add up if it's a large aircraft and an intricate paint job. The more paint also means more weight, leading to more fuel burn. It's not much per flight, but that will very quickly add up.
Anyway, I like the new Alaska paint. A nice revision/update to a classic scheme I enjoy seeing at any airport (since they don't fly here to DTW
