This is quite concerinig, and a very serious issue... was it like only last month that another airline did this at AMS?

One day something will be on the taxiway, or the taxi-way will 'run out' .

That is kinda scary. Like Matt typed above, "One day something will be on the taxiway" and it won't be a pretty sight, 1 aircraft T-bones another aircraft. That TENERIFE accident comes to my mind.

What can be done against something like this to ever happen again ?

Well.. I have been thinking exactly that Jay...
Surely the bright green taxiway centre lights would have been turned on - only a few day's earlier, there was a heavy snowfall over the area, I think that lights should be mandatory around the clock - good weather, or bad weather, day or night.
Another thing I can think of is RAAS, built by Honeywell Aerospace: RWY Awareness and Advisory System.. to cut a long story short.. it stops RWY incursions and accidental take-off. This should be made mandatory just like GPWS is already.
What about a good nights sleep before flying..sounds stupid, but I guess is pays when it comes to alertness.
Lastly: constant ATC contact and position updates could help?

Cheers.. God forbid this ever happening again .
