A good move! First splitting, then flying, in the end chosing. Good for both manufacturers in these hard days!

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

Will the large Airbus narrowbody fleet that UA have enable it to look after the Airbus fleet efficiently as there will be some commonality i imagine??

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

A big step forward into transforming United back into a competitive airline. I found a pretty interesting piece of information regarding United's domestic fleet revamp here.

They're strikingly similar.

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

Considering the fact that the U.S. government (through the PBGC) picked-up the retirements of the UA employees during their first bankruptcy (notice I said "first"), it would have been nice for UA to at least commit to a single wide-body, namely the Boeing 787.

However, since UA chose to purchase both the 787 and A350, my prediction is that both aircraft will be flown for a short period of time within the UA fleet, and then one aircraft model will be dumped for the other.

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

Good for United! They're doing what some other airlines like ET, SQ, etc did by ordering both. SQ will be using the 787 for short-medium haul destinations and A350's for long haul destinations. I wonder if UA will follow something similar.

I wish they would have just stuck with the 787 and then used the extra money to order some new short haul aircraft like... oh i don't know the 737NG

They are going to order some narrowbodies sometime early next year.

Right now it looks like the A321(With new winglets) 737 next gen and Embraer are all competing.

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

The A321 is a suitable replacement for the 757. Would prefer to see some United 739's. I think the A350 will end up replacing the 777's that United currently operate and the 767's will be replaced by the 787.

since problems by dreamliner and also by Airbus 380 showed that it is risky for an airline to set their money on one single product, if you are not fully sure about potential problems

I think united managment is smart to order both in smaller number and observe how both models would develop..if one product would have big troubles or delays, united could more focus on the more succesfull product..

the troubles of both Airbus and Boeing by delivering or fixing technical problems show the airlines that you must always have a plan B, since in airline business the competition will get extremly hard, it is important to be prepared for every potential problem

Re: United orders 787s and A350s

I totally agree with Gator. As weird as it seems, the days of achieving substantial savings by having uniform fleets from the same manufacturer are gone. Nowadays, if you want to stay in business (and make money!) you have to diversify and forget being married to a single manufacturer. It's no wonder we're seeing such diverse fleets all over the planet. I have no problem with this. If Boeing or Airbus want to corner a segment of the market, then they have to prove that they can deliver an affordable and reliable product on time, all the time, but so far neither one has been able to do it much better than the other.
