Of course they are going to say that, otherwise if they said they were going to deal only with Boeing what kind of deal do you think Boeing would give them... not one as good as if they said well were going to look at Airbus.

Hmm....just sound like, to me at least, that Delta is keeping their options open at the moment. They are going to need a MD-series replacement soon and with Embraer and Bombardier/Canadair both bringing out new airplanes, don't leave them out either. It all comes down to money right now, and thats something I don't believe any airline has.

Re: Delta to Buy both Airbus and Boeing

I hope that I don't turn this into a A vs B thread but as explained above it is good to keep options open. I'm just wondering if this may strain the Boeing-Delta relationship?

Hmmm, I don't know. I like Airbus but I think over the years the 777 proved itself the better competitor. So I wouldn't bet on that one. Although it would look nice.

Thats right Im doing a course for International Marketing at Uni this semester and I had the case study for Iberia Airlines when they wanted to renew their fleet of 747s

Its called a BATNA. Better Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. Iberia wasnt gonna buy from Boeing but used Boeing to get through to Airbus. I think the cuts included 50% discount and minimum resale values of the A340s.

Re: Delta to Buy both Airbus and Boeing

It wouldn't suprise me in the least if Delta placed orders for more Airbus A330-323X's; as they have proven to be a phenominal aircraft and would fit nicely within the Delta longhaul route structure. As for replacing the aging MD-88 fleet, they already took delivery of their first 737-700 and have several more on order. A key part of saving money is to limit the number of aircraft types/families within the fleet, and the 737-700 fits nicely into that picture along side their ever expanding 737-800 fleet.

Although Northwest has an extensive A320-114 fleet, Delta's current fleet of 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft are relatively new. So if it comes down to streamlining the fleet by aircraft type, the A319-114's and A320-114's will more likely lose out to the 737 fleet. Then there's the 757-200 vs. A321-211. As Boeing has stopped production of the 757-200 varient due to similar capacity and range of their 737-900ER (which looks like a "low-rider" version of the 757-200), more than likely a suitable replacement for the aging 757-200's whereas they are part of the 737 family group.

Delta could have ordered the A340-500 for their ultra-longhaul routes. Without batting an eyelash, they opted for the 777-200LR varient to fill the niche due to commonality with their 777-200ER fleet. That is perhaps the best clue to furture aircraft orders, whereas they will say "Airbus" (like saying "BOO!") in front of Boeing in order to scare/make Boeing jump through the hoop.

I think that they will probably go majority boeing but for the most part I agree with that statement. But I am intrested in knowing what will happen to Northwest Air Cargo aircraft.

Re: Delta to Buy both Airbus and Boeing

Delta would be foolish to eliminate, discontinue, or sell off the Cargo division of Northwest. Probably will repaint the fleet in the new Delta colors. Would be interesting should they come up with something off key from their current livery for "Delta Cargo".

I hope that DL sticks with Boeing birds. I would not mind them going with Bombardier birds though but do not want to see them buying more Air Buses. I have never flown on an Airbus and don't want to start now. I like to stick to American and Canadian built birds.

*SIGH* You sound like most people in the Seattle Metro. I feel like I'm the only airbus fan here, and apparently some folks don't realize that many components of the NEW BOEING planes are made overseas! It reminds me of the Dodge fans that want to buy American, but most don't realize that Dodge's big plant is actually in Canada. I will not go way out of my way to fly strictly Airbus, but I know many Boeing fanatics like yourself that will. I'm heading to DC to visit family in January, and hopefully avoid most of the inauguration mess, and I'll be on all Boeing. Seriously, expand your horizons! Either way, I'm excited to see the new "Delta" A330-200 fly from Sea-Tac to Ams. That should be neat to see.

Re: Delta to Buy both Airbus and Boeing

Ask any mechanic who works on both Boeing and Airbus airplanes, and they'll tell you straight out. Boeing makes a much better airplane. The airbus is a throwaway part.
