Was cruisiung through A.net lately, and I found out that PA IV is finally done with. Looks like we'll only see them on Guilford Trains from now on.

Well, another carrier-shutdown.
The REAL PanAm doesn't exist since more than 15 years!

Re: PanAm IV finally shuts down
If you're in the Federal Prison System and needed to be flown to a new facility, you could've been put onto one of their 727s. Other than that, I would imagine people not too far from their airports probebly flew them, though I guess not as many as they wanted. I remember when PAIII (when they were still sorta seperate from Boston Maine, before they were the "Clipper Connection") used to fly into KSFB. Really, other than a few people flying to Allentown and a few of those other out of the way airports, I don't know if they ever served any major market (except for flights to San Juan). But really, KSFB is just one of those secondary airports that gets the UK charters pretty much. PA I was the great one, PA II was a decent attempt to keep it living, PA III and IV were just crappy chances at ****ting on the name from a RR company from which I hear has trouble keeping it's own tracks in decent shape (somewhere on the net you'll see a photo of one of hte PA Boxcars derailed).
Of course, I feel sorry for those who will lose their jobs over this since I guess they had little to do with the managments flawed logic of "Once well known name (most poeple either forgot about them or are too young to know (or care))+out of hte way airports=instant success."

Tim Mellon (the guy behind Guilford; owner of the PanAm "Empire") is a moron. Like LOTski said, he can't even make money on the trains, despite having a monopoly on most of his lines. Where does all his money come from then? His family is a financial powerhouse in Banking, Investments and (if I remember correctly) insurance.

A child of the Mellon Bank empire. He's got as much "brain trust" as Paris, demonstrating once again (as if we needed more proof) that business prowess is not an inherited trait.

Re: PanAm IV finally shuts down
My local university (Ball State) used them as a charter for the VIPs and the football team and etc. Then the private prison close by used them from the Phoenix area to bring prisoners here. I loved those old tri-jets in that scheme!

A little bit off topic. Does anybody know what this aircraft is beeing used for.
Looks like a flight for the Federal Prison System?!?!

Yeah, the PA billboard scheme and the 727s (most of which were actaully of PA I origin) were the best part about PA III and PA IV. But as my neighbor, a former PA I employee herself once said about it, it just isn't the "real" Pan Am, that died in 12/4/1991.
@ CO777/200, it does appear to be one of those Prison flights judging from the vehicles surrounding it (it appears a lot of the vehicles around it have lightbars on top, which is something you'd commonly find on a corrections department van.)

Re: PanAm IV finally shuts down
According to the wiki, and since it is a wiki, I cannot confirm it's factuality, it ended all schedualed service, could be that it was doing a charter for a travel group or the 727 immediatly found a new home with a cargo airline or new pax airline in Brasil.

I did on a charter from JFK-STT-JFK. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say I'm not sad to see them go.

Thats funny you show that picture, as that 737-800 was just in my hometown of Muncie, Indiana hauling in prisoners from Arizona. The usual aircraft was a PanAm 727 but then they shut down ops and now we get 737s.
