747-300 antennae rod on wings

i always thought all classic 747s had the characteristic antennae rods projecting rear off its wingtips:

Wings900 Re: 747-300 antennae rod on wings

Very interesting question, unfortunately i dont know the answer, other than it is obviously optional and not needed for the plane to fly.
Does anyone know?

Once when i flew an Air India 747-200 the wing antennae rods were there but the system was out of order as the the plane was not new and it was an Ex Qantas aircraft. It's actually supposed to record the conditions and any traffic of some sort of to the planes side because that time the radar would only project the information infront of the pilot and not of to the sides.
