Re: BA B777 Short Landing at Heathrow - Airport Closed

If this doesn't show BAA why Heathrow needs a 3 or even 4 runways, what will?

A) They've hardly got the space.
B) What is an extra 3rd or 4th runway going to prevent? These incidents will still happen
C) They're perfectly fine with two at the moment.

Paul, LHR is in dire need of another runway. I think what Chard was getting at, was an incident like this closes one runway, the whole operation goes down the crapper with cancelled flights and such. Heathrow was crippled for spell by this incident. If this incident would have happened at ATL or FRA or a host of other airports, they still would have had a couple of runways to use....instead of going down to just one runway.

Point taken.

Having said that, Manchester, the busiest in the north, would have to cope with only one should an incident like this happen, all be it, it doesn't take half as many flights as Heathrow's scale. I also think Heathrow has very little room to expand with a 3rd runway, though, that could just be me.

They would want to add a 6th terminal with it. If they tryed they could get the 3 runway lenghtened. If a thrid runway was added BA, BMI and yes Virgin could add alot more flights.

Good plan, but I hope that runway length isn't to scale, what good will a 5,500-6,000 ft runway do? You can't even get a 737 to take off in that distance!

Sure about that? 737's, MD-80's, 757's, and a daily FedEx A-310 all use John Wayne/Orange County's 5700 foot runway with ease every day of the week.

That is true. An A330, A300, C-17 and 707 have all used that runway with ease

Re: BA B777 Short Landing at Heathrow - Airport Closed

The latest issue (Jan/Feb) of Airports of the World magazine says the runway would be about 7,220 ft (2,200 m) which should support B733/A320 class of aircraft without much trouble.

I have never seen any evidence of an A-330, C-17, or 707 ever landing at SNA. A C-17 could do it with ease, and a lightly loaded 707 or A-330 could pull it off as well....just never seen any proof they have ever landed there.

Somewhere on A.net, I saw an A330 and the old Air Force One at SNA.
Here is the C-17.

A310's even!!!???!!! But, the legal requirement for a 717 is 7,000ft! You I mean I spent that much time worrying to try and lengthen the runway at KENW (in Flight Sim) to make it capable of handling a 717, when I don't need to, that reduces cost so much and stuff! I wish I knew that before!!!!

I suggest you read the caption. The C-17 didn't land. Flyby only. Just did an extensive search and came up with nothing on AF1, or an A-330 at SNA. My good friend Jeremiah is an employee at KSNA and a long time spotter there and at various other SoCal airports. If an A-330 or C-17 landed there, he would know about it and to his knowladge, nothing

Maybe i'm just imagining things. You must live close to SNA.
