Unhappy Polar Route Radiation?

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone heard much about this topic? I read that the radiation from the sun can possibly cause damage to passengers/crew. Or is this just a mythbusters question? I thought it'd be interesting to hear what your opinion is. After the Seoul to Toronto flight my skin turned green (just joking). But seriously - there is something I once heard.

I probably wouldn't fly to the Far East then. Unless I wore a space suit.

Re: Polar Route Radiation?

Aircrews ARE exposed to increased levels of cosmic radiation. Dosage is proportional to altitude - nothing new in this. The FAA has had guidelines regarding radiation safety since 1992 but I'm not sure whether these are policed. I'm sure the major airlines would have Occ Health & Safety guidelines regarding this. Long haulflights probably not recommended for pregnant stewardesses.

Here's a brief summary: http://www.stuk.fi/saannosto/ST12-4e.html
