Screw de-ice boots, install a "weeping wing"!

Doesn't adding flaps decrease stall speed?

Yeah.

But ice can disrupt the airflow over your wings, so it's better to leave the flaps up than become a test pilot.

What will adding flaps probably do?

Adding flaps could slow you down too much.

Any possibility they could become frozen in the up position?

No not really, but adding flaps "could" increase the possibility of a tail stall. Not a fun thing to get. We had to practice recovering from tail stalls in the simulator for the C208 Caravan. How do you recover from a tail stall?

After an engine failure when would you put your flaps down? Or would you?

The flaps go down when the field is assured.

Tail stall? Hmm, I'd say push the nose over, same as you would with a regular wing stall.

El wrongo. You do the opposite of a wing stall. You pull back. You won't get a buffet or stall warning like you do with a wing stall. The controls (elevator) usually start to oscillate and feel mushy.

Really? Thanks for the correction!

So, when would a tail stall be encountered? I know that slips in 172s aren't recomended because of possible elevator buffeting...is that a tail stall?

No, usually if you encounter a heavy amount of ice and let's say your deice equipment fails on the tailplane your tail could stall. No fun for anyone.

Hey Richie, where is everyone? Are you my only student now?

That makes sense, cap.

No idea where everyone went, guess I'm the only one!

Brian, honestly. You really should still be flying. You are way too smart for your craft not to be. Not having you as a pilot is like flying a 747 down the driveway just to collect the mail...
