Re: Wahoo pilots quiz time!

I'm going to say yes as well. Because, the AOA deals with how the airflow flows over the airplane, at least on a Citation it does.

Wahoo, I have a question for you....I've been wondering this for a while, and No one's been able to answer it for me.

Look on a MD-80, or a DC-9, or 727, the engines that are placed on the airplane at an angle. Why is that?....The inlet of the jet engine is higher than the outlet. Is it just the cowling? or is the engine actually placed at an angle?.....

You are more correct.

I have never really noticed the AOA of the engines of those jets. I have a feeling it is just the cowling that gives that appearance. When I took my 727 flight engineer written test they never explained that. Only the difference of engine #2 intake between the -100 and -200 series 727. I would think you would want the AOA near 0 degrees instead of angling upward only because you would lose airflow in a climb.

Compressibility is when you fly faster and at higher altitudes it affects the airflow going into the pitot tube. This error will show an airspeed LESS than the actual airspeed.

Somebody please explain "true altitude", "pressure altitude", "density altitude" and "indicated altitude". Good luck gentlemen.

Indicated Altitude- Is the Altitude showing on the altimeter.

Density Altitude- Is the altitude that effects aircraft performance, takes in account the Temperature, humidity, and pressure

True Altitude- Altitude Above Sea Level

This is what I could come up with.... Feel free to Educate me.

Re: Wahoo pilots quiz time!

Good job!

Pressure altitude is the altitude when the altimeter is set to the standard pressure of 29.92 inches or 1013.2 millibars. In the US pressure altitude is required at and above 18,000' MSL. And of course, flight levels start at 18,000' MSL in the US.

What do you set in your altimeter at an uncontrolled field with no AWOS?

Re: Wahoo pilots quiz time!

By and large it would be OK to set your altimeter from an AWOS within a few miles as pressure and elevation readings will be similar, but otherwise set it at the field's known elevation MSL making correction for barometric variation due to local weather.

Re: Wahoo pilots quiz time!

Personally I would set it to the field elevation. But what do I know, I'm just the 800 pound gorilla in the room.
