The results of the Airport Competitions are in! We’ve asked two of the winners to share something about their life as a dedicated collector.
Kabasch, who is a 38 year old graphic designer from Switzerland, won the Airport Competition in the category ‘Best Retro’ with his ‘Zurich Intl’ (see picture). He has a son and a family, is interested in arts, pop music, politics and even in civil aircraft. He likes to spend time on Wings900, Scale600 and the Diecastaircraftforum and has a collection of circa 40 models in 1:400 Scale and circa 240 in 1:600 scale!
“The model of zurich airport is in parts more than 20 years old. I began on it when I was 14 years old. In the last three years I renovated it and stocked it with little self made cars in paper. I have not much time for this hobby (alongside other hobbies) next to job and family. Therefore, I'm working years on it. So I have enough time to consider the best solution in my head. I love to consider how to abstract things, so that they develop the full effect at this very small scale.”
The winner of the ‘Best Fictional’ Airport Competition is Jimmy Leonardi Leong from Singapore, aka Diecastdrool. He is in the building materials and construction industry, which also explains his dream to build an airport diorama: “I'm so glad that I finally completed it 100% using my own imagination and effort”.
“I have roughly about 80 die cast planes in my collection currently, comprising 70% in 1:500 scale, 25% in 1:400 scale and the rest in 1:200. I collect mostly all airlines that I've flown with. By the way, I used to travel extensively across 5 continents in my previous job. The only fleet builder in my collection is Garuda Indonesia Airlines. My collection dated back in 1998 in 1:600 scales, which I had lost in 2002. I think the reason that my model won this Award is because of its originality and attention to detail. I did put my whole heart into building this diorama from the scratch.”
