Description
| |
In 1933, the amphibian Consolidated Canso, better known as the Catalina, was developed. The last version PBY-5A was launched in 1954. The aircraft, which is sea- and landworthy, was produced in more than 1,000 examples and has earned many merits as Air and Sea Rescue aircraft when rescuing military and civilian casualties. The model is based on the original PBY-5A registered 433939.

| Model Review
| | Mould & Assembly: The wingtips on the prototype can fold down, forming pontoons when the Catalina lands on water. On the first Catalina model we reviewed the pontoons were glued in the up position, here with the Air & Sea Rescue model they are glued in the down position. This confirms our initial suspicion that additional models from Herpa were to come in a "water landing" configuration. Th rear underside of the fuselage still has a a part glued into it, making us think this solid part could be changed out for one with a hole for a stand. Only points off here is the front wheel, it doesn't come down from the wheel well far enough. Additionally the rear wheels could be larger (the tires are the right diameter, the wheel hubs should be larger). Realism: The colors on this model follow the lines of the boat shaped fuselage just as they do on the real aircraft. Markings on the struts may go up a bit too high. The insignias are placed in the right spots; the leading edges of the wings. Details: The details on this model are done really well. The rear turrets are glued on, but have the glass frames painted on...hard to see, but the detail is there. The printed details are well placed and have sharp printing details. Being 1:400 gives Herpa a bit more room to print these small details.
| Pluses
| | No glue marks on clear parts! Very interesting mode, even better with pontoons down Crisp and clear printing
| Minuses
| | Front gear not long enough Possible rear tires too large
