 Description
Herpa States: With the F/A-18, called Hornet, the US Navy is well-equipped. It carries a 20 mm cannon and is capable of carrying an external load of up to 7,7 tons of missiles and bombs. Two engines rated at 71 kN thrust accelerate the aircraft up to mach 1,8 and to a ceiling of 15 kilometers. The “Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 102” is based in Atsugi, Japan, and currently deployed on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, which operates from the Pacific base Guam.

Model Review
Mould & Assembly: As with the other 1:200 military fighters from Herpa we are again treated to a superb mould, not only for the design but the assembly on this model is near perfection. Normally we comment on some sort of wing root gap, but not the case here. Even the rear horizontal stabs have virtually no gap. The only downside that we can find is that the canopy is glued into place; a minor point, but for those creating a diorama with the new 1:200 Herpa Military figures; this may pose to be an issue. Additionally we did have one of the missles come loose, nothing a little CA glue couldn't fix and we certainly can't take points off for that.
Realism: While the model is missing the extra external fuel tanks the rest of the model displays details that are extremely exact to the real birds. The front landing gear doors are perfectly replicated, including the complicated gear structure. The replica of the 50th anniversary paint scheme is done extremely well. The only possible mis-print we could find was that of the tail number just above the "50th" logo on the nose; it should be a bit higher.
Details: Where do we start; other than Herpa has captured just about everything you can think of on this model. If we had to comment, we'd like to see rubber tires and the opening canopy.

Some collectors may not be big on the special color schemes and liveries on military aircraft; however put that aside and take a look at this model up close. It is done to near perfection; highly recommended!
