Description

The NATO E-3A early warning aircraft have been operating from their German main operating base in Geilenkirchen near the Dutch border since February of 1982. 17 Boeing E-3A aircraft are available for the E-3A Component’s aerial surveillance and tactical missions. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first E-3A machines landing in Geilenkirchen, NATO equipped its airplane, registered LX-N90443, with a very impressive special livery containing the flags of NATO’s 26 member states. Now it is released in the 1/500 scale.

| Model Review
| | Mould & Assembly: Here comes our second review on Herpa's E-3A mould. Once again we'll start with the front of this model. The cockpit as you can see slopes down slightly too much in a vertical angle. The nose still is slightly chopped off at the very tip of the nose which gives it a slightly odd appearance. The nose gear is still too far back which is a shame as this is probabaly one of the few major issues with this mould. The wings themselves are well moulded with the antennas being moulded at the wingtips and the pylons are well moulded and are smoothly connected to the wings and engines. The tail now is painted instead of moulded in grey like the previous model which is a significant improvement as the light is no longer able to pass through the tail. Realism: The livery on this model is very well done and quite impressive to say the least. The silver color on the front of the fuselage is very finely done so there is minimal flakes in the metallic silver paint and am very impressed with this color choice. The flags of the NATO countries are all very well done and well replicated and correctly positioned on the fuselage. The dark blue color is well done with the silver stars being correctly positioned throughout the remiander of the fuselage. The lightning bolts on the tail are also well shaped and correctly positioned on the fuselage. Herpa has done an amazing job on the fading of the orange to yellow on the tip of the tail and is some of the finest color blending I have seen on any model yet to be produced. The wing markings are correctly placed and are true ot the actual aircraft. Details: This model is extremely well detailed, once again we'll start with the front of the model and the refueling markings are correctly placed and well done. The doors are correctly placed and outlined in yellow. The doors also have additional emergency marking details that are unsurpassed on any previous Herpa model and truely set a new bar for realism. The registration and additional markings on the satellite boom are clearly marked. The satellite dish itself is also very well done and true to the real thing. The engines are very well detailed with the front half painted in blue with additional red warning markings. Another interesting detail is how Herpa has correctly painted the horizontal stabalizers instead of their generic patterns which they have used for many years and hopefully this detail is going to be able to be extended to the full line of models.
