Although, the legendary Starfighter was overburdened in fulfilling the roles of fighter, strategic nuclear fighter, reconnaissance aircraft and naval aircraft, it was very popular as the “Porsche of all jets” among the pilots. 292 crashes and 116 killed pilots during its operating time from 1960 to 1991 at the German Federal Air Force gave the Fighter the commonly known and little complimentary name “widow maker”. Herpa honors this important, although controversial airplane with this model, registered JA+116 of the Jagdgeschwader-71 Richthofen from Wittmund, East Friesland.

| Model Review
| | Mould & Assembly: As with most of the 1:200 military aircraft from Herpa this mould is near perfect in terms of shape and replication of the prototype. Since that is the case for this model, we'll focus on construction for this review. The mould of the front antenna is extremely thin, and while a thin wire may prove to be more accurate in size, the plastic does just fine. One observation is the noticable wing root gap, this gap does extend to the midpoint of the engine which does detract a bit from the overall look of the model. The landing gears and doors are a bit over-sized and the panel lines are moulded a bit too deep. Realism: I mentioned earlier that the panel lines are too deep, this is often the case on many military models, specifically those from Hobby Master. Since this model is 1:200, the panel lines really should be less noticeable - this could be achieved by either making these moulded lines smaller, or printing the lines instead in a very light color. The tire sizes are accurate, however the model should sit a bit higher on the front end. Details: The 1:200 military models from Herpa always seem to have an endless number of details, this model is no exception. From the Luftwaffe insignia to warning plaques; Herpa has done a great job of replicating them. The cockpit looks realistic, and while glued in a closed canopy position, fits the model very well.
