 Description
Herpa States: From the 60s on, Swissair was partially considered the best European airline and therefore also one of the best worldwide. One reason was the early purchase of the DC-8, the back then new and revolutionary jet airplane of the preferred vendor Douglas. The DC-8-32, registered HB-IDB 1960 and named “Basel-Stadt” was commissioned mainly for North Atlantic routes. Herpa Wings releases a model of this legendary aircraft as full-metal model in the 1/200 scale. So let's see if this full-metal model is worth its weight in gold....

Model Review
Mould and Assembly: The first thing you notice is its weight - yep, it is metal and heavy at that (so pay attention to any shipping by weight).

The mould looks good. the nose section is the correct shape and the air inlets in the nose are nicely done (although they could use a touch of paint to highlight them.) The front gear doors are a little but too wide and tall.

The wing root looks good but the gap is a little bit too big for a 1:200 scale model. The wing itself is nice with sharp details and nice looking pylons. The engines are also OK but there are some rough patches on the finish. The inlets are nicely darkened and the engine detail is OK.

The tail section also looks good, with the tail plate painted on but the fuselage is not tapered flat for the horizontal stabilizers. The vertical stabilizer is way too long and its attachment to the fuselage is off.

Livery: The livery on this mould is nicely done and no issues with the finish.

However, I must say I get the impression that the color is way off and the red should be darker.

The registration looks like white paint on red and the red bleeds through a bit. The SWISSAIR is a bit stretched as well.

Details: If you are looking for details, this model has plenty. the strobe lights are present. The nose section has some nice details including the shield. It is hard to complain about the door details - or lack thereof - because they simply didn't have that much visible on the real plane. The ramp section under the door could be a little darker though. The engine details are nice but it would have been even better to have seen two-toned engines. The gear are also nicely done and have rubber wheels.

With some mould issues that can be easily overlooked, this model is a pretty neat addition to Herpa's growing catalog of metal 1:200 scale models. The livery issue (color) should also be easy to overlook. But I can't stop thinking that in order to turn this model into a great model one has to do just that though - forget about its shortcomings. Don't let that stop you though, a retro livery and an airplane that have disappeared from the sky are always worth looking at.

...nice review - thanks N1786B ! Only "Overall Impression" for only 8.0? ... this beauty is simply "eye-catcher" (for all-metal model and retro fans of course! :)
