 Description
Despite the significantly delayed delivery of the A380, Qantas even increased their order of 12 aircraft by another eight. The first ordered A380 has already received a registration and should take up service as VH-OQA by the end of 2008. Herpa Wings is already releasing this gigantic airplane model in the 1/200 scale. So they are finally rolling off the assembly line and we get a chance to look at the second generation of A380 models.

Model Review
Mould and Assembly: Wow, when you see the box and when you pull the model out of the packaging, the first thing you say is.... B...I...G.

The assembly of this model is perfect and there are no visible gaps that present a problem or which warrant being mentioned here. The mould is better than the first A380 models. the nose shape is correct, the wing root and fuselage look nice. The wings are done well and the crisp detail is always nice. The engines and the pylons are also very good.

Livery: Well considering the first one is still being assembled, there is no real livery to compare it to. One thing that can be said is that this model has the new Qantas livery and character font. Good job, guys. another interesting thing is that the one world logo is much smaller than the one on the A380 that was decked out for Australia when the A380 was doing its world tour. I wonder what the real livery will look like...

Details: With an airplane this size, you'd think we would have so many details that would finally keep us quite. Well, think again. there are tons of details, beginning with the wipers and going all the way to the fantastic APU. Along the way, the other details are also great - the engines, the two toned engine pylons, the fantastically detailed gear kept me speechless... until I asked "where are the pitot tubes and rain gutters?" I guess we can survive without them - but it would be nice one day.

A huge model. Make sure you have room for it and the box. Even if it is a pseudo-fantasy model as one has not entered service yet, the level of detail along with the accuracy of the details/livery/gear do make this a nice model.

Herpa 200 Qantas A380 falls short, Wednesday, 16 April 2008

I expected better given the large scale. This model does not match the Gemini Jets 1:400 version for detail and crispness. The tail still suffers from being translucent and there are gaps between the pylons and the wings. The plastic seams along the wing edges are obvious and the engines themselves are completely hollow. Herpa have got the Qantas red color right but the paint on the engines, gear doors and wing fences is matt and not gloss as it is on the fuselage. Herpa did not correct the mistake it made on the 1:500 version and has incomplete printing of the overwing doors where they meet the fairing. The engines lack the vortex generators that are present on the GJ model and the landing gear looks like grey plastic.
Overall, I was disappointed with the level of detail and realism compared with other models in this scale.
