Herpa states:When Delta commissioned its first MD-11 example in 1992, it proved to be far from a mature design. Numerous defects in its theoretically outstanding structure led to Delta’s decision to overturn their fleet plans and replace the airplane with Boeing 777s. The N806DE is released in the classic “Widget” design which embossed the airline’s image for more than 40 years. Since the launch of a new livery ten years ago, that image has been changed three more times again.
A 1:200 MD-11 - how cool - let's check this one out.

| | Mould and Assembly: The nose section is great. the shape is correct, the inlets are nice too. The cockpit section looks good too. the only thing that is a little strange is the dark gray windows on the black/dark blue nose section.
The front gear is great and they were even able to reproduce the angle of the gear doors - nice touch. Moving back to wings, you can see that the wing joint is almost inexistent which is really nice. the wings themselves have plenty of crisp details and the winglets are also nicely done. The engine pylons are two-tone and are nicely done; Moving on to the engines, they look nice. As advertised, the fan blades spin freely with the slightest breeze.
Moving back to the tail, the construction is done well. They even were able to add the engine fan in the tail - where it should be. One thing to note though is the inlet is white all the way back to the fan blades and too bad it isn't dark - but then again with white molded plastic, maybe they didn't have a choice.
As the mould is plastic, the metal belly is painted. this metallic color is really nice and is not the glitter type of paint that has been found on models before.
Livery: One of the questions I have is there are some pictures of the MD-11 with a black nose and a dark blue cheatline. However all of the older pictures show the nose and cheatline as being the same color. But this is simply a question of older pics - herpa got it right and there is a difference. But maybe the blue is a little too dark? Benefit of the doubt to Herpa.
The Delta lines up and looks good. The widgets are also nicely done and line up correctly with the rest of the details/fuselage. The red line above the cheat line could be 1mm thicker though.
The tail looks good too with all of the livery details correctly positioned.
Details: With the new competition in 1:200, Herpa has used this mould to introduce a whole bunch of new details. As they are staying with plastic (I would like metal at this scale, but postage would be killer on a model this size.
So in order to entice us to look at plastic, we get details galore. The strobes on top of the fuselage, the antennas on top and underneath, nicely done gear doors, inlets, two-toned engine pylons, lots of engine details are all very welcome additions to the nicely printed details such as the doors and horizontal stabilizer plates.
