Description

The original of this mold novelty was registered for China Xinjiang Airlines (CXJ) as B-2018. The first plans for a Soviet pendant to the Boeing 747 were developed around 1968 and the result was a very crude airplane, which was performance-wise clearly inferior to the 747, and didn’t stand a chance, technically, against newly developed western jets like DC-10, L-1011 or Airbus A300. Even companies from the former Eastern Bloc like LOT, CSA or Interflug couldn’t do anything with it, so CXJ became one of the very few airlines to operate the IL-86 outside the former Soviet Union. The model is limited to 2,500 examples.

| | Mould and Assembly: Herpa's long waited IL-86 mould is perfectly executed and the wing box is seamless, although the nose section does not match that of the IL-96 also released by Herpa (both aircraft share the same nose structure). The scaling of this model is correct and of its' parts are fit well. This model's finish is of good quality and there are no apparent flaws seen. The assembly of this model is excellent, and as mentioned the new seamless wing box adds to this model's beauty. The overall impression is excellent, this model looks like the real thing.
Livery: Although nothing more than a cliche livery, China Xinjiang's visual identity was special in its' own way and choosing this rather obscure IL-86 operator was smart. The livery is accurate and replicates that of the actual plane. The print and paint quality are excellent and there are no apparent print/paint flaws visible. The colors are vivid and match the actual livery.
Details: The mould is well detailed and replicated. The livery lacks details such as cargo doors' handles, cockpit window frames and other small details. The cockpit windows appear to be wider and different from those in the actual plane. The printed details are nicely done. The gears' tires are made of rubber and look more realistic. The engines are correctly positioned and replicated. The level of details could be improved dramatically, which would only add to this model's attractiveness.
