 Description
Alitalia commissioned 21 examples of the Sud Aviation Caravelle 6N series. The original, registered I-DABA and the name “Regolo” was the first to be launched in 1961. The model, limited to 1,000 examples, will carry the Italian airline’s livery launched in 1970. So we get a limited edition SUD Caravelle in Alitalia colors? Let's take a look!

Model Review
Mould and Assembly: Well, I feel that this is one of the two shortcomings of this model. First, overall the model is well done and the assembly and mould are pretty good. There are only two things I have to say about the mould. First and foremost is a compliment - it looks good and feels good. the second, third and well... The first thing you notice is the polished metal wings. It seems as if they tarnish very easily, this giving your model a dark-patched dirty metal look out of the box. Another issue is the wing root as the real metal wings are partt of the wing root, and the real metal part of the wing root is painted over and is missing a coat - the colors just don't match up perfectly with the fuselage. The same is true for the vertical stabilizer. It is NOT plastic, but sometimes be careful what you wish for..... you might get it!

The assembly is well done and there are no major complaints. I must mention the wing root gap though as it is borderline.

Livery: The livery... well as far as this livery goes, there is not much to say. the green cheat line looks great and lines up exactly as it should up front. moving on back, it looks fantastic on the tail and the gap between the fuselage and tail are just right. The Alitalia is correctly placed and lines up as it should. Looks nice

Details: The details are great... except :-)
the gears are fantastic an look nice. the nose section has the reg on the tip of the nose and the wipers as well. it would be nice idf they could figure out a way to highlight the pax windows - in the middle of the cheat line, they are hard to see. With this size model, we could have expected more details though. The wings are crisp and the detail excellent. The large wing flange is too small though and the engine, although nicely done could use some more detail.
Interestingly enough, they did not print the rear stairs on the Caravelle - the trademark way of unloading passengers - is simply missing from this model - Wow!he biggest faux pas is not printing the back stairs as this was the way

A good model in a scale we can appreciate. Even if the mould and assembly are OK, the lack of specific details such as the pax stairwell for a model of this scale is simply too much. The real metal seems to discolor a bit, but the livery, wings, and other parts of the model are pretty nice.

If you like Caravelles and large models, this is a nice one with a decent value for money. You may find better, but it is still a good model.

First 1:200 in my collection, Thursday, 22 May 2008

I agree with the Editor's review about the mould and the livery (very well done), I think that the details of this plane are something more than sufficent (6 in Italy is sufficent), the piont is that the Caravelle was not full of details as some new planes are today.
Some more details would be great, for example the small alitalia logo near the left front door or the central aerial, but also as it comes out from herpa it's good enough.
I hope my opinion could help in case someone will have to take a decision about this model who, for me, has been the first 1:200 model to join my collection!
