Introduction

Herpa now offers you another favourably priced alternative to the popular Wings-scale collections: airplane models in the 1/600 scale. The models marketed under the brand name of MAGIC are entirely made of metal, and carry the colors of various popular airlines. The new range of models starts off with ten models, among them seven different aircraft types. Since the 1960s, Northwest has operated one of the world's largest Boeing 747 fleets and was even the launch customer for the 747-400. Product ID: 470087

The Model

The first series of planes in the MAGIC lineup has quite a few 747s. Along with the KLM and QANTAS, the NWA 747-400 landed for review. Taking a quick look at the picture above, it seems that this plane will also not disappoint. As stated in the other reviews, the amount of detail on the 1:600 planes is just fantastic; The tampo-printed livery, details and craftsmanship have considerably raised the bar when it comes to 1:600 scale models.

The 747 nose section is a little off here - it could have been a little bit more pointed. And the 1:600 Shabak-style gear comes as no surprise to people familiar with 1:600 models. One thing that does come as a plesant surprise is the amount of detail. Just have a look at the escape hatch, Starteam Logo, door, and even cockpit wipers. They are all there and nicely done too. Everything seems to line up here - the red triangle is good and the NWA is correct.

Moving on to the back, you can see some of the minor gaps that come with this type of mould. The windows and doo here line up correctly too. The flag could be just a little bit lower but it is the correct size. The horizontal stabilizer really looks nice and is part of the fuselage mould, so no gaps are present. The details are sharp and the livery is mostly correct. The red sections starts exactly where it should, but the silver circle and are a little too close to the leading edge. But I'm not complaiing!

When looking at the wings, you will note the following: The decent gap for a model this size (and especially at this price), the crisp wing detail, and the thickness becasue it is metal. Overall, the engines are nicely done and have a fair amount of detail as well. The main complaint about the 1:600 scale plan is the engine pylons. They are much better than other 1:600 models, but still do not look realistic enough.

Herpa has decided to use its silver 'glitter' paint on this model as well in a decent attempt to reproduce a EuroWhite-inspired Northwest livery. Even if the livery is very plain and, well, boring, this model has the detailed needed to make it quite a nice model.

Final Thoughts

Impressive addition to the MAGIC series of models, this NWA has the details and finishing that make it a very good model for collectors at a prie that allows them to be "stocking-stuffers" at Christmas. Compared to other 1:600 models, with their attention to detail and tampo printing, the MAGIC series is a winner.
