Introduction

Lufthansa currently opeates a fleet of 29 A340-300s. This aircraft registered D-AIGS carries the additonal "soccer nose" to promote the World Cup 2006. This aircraft was delivered October 13, 1999 and is named Bergisch Gladbach.

The Model

Well it wouldn't be a batch of reviews without one Lufthansa model to be reviewed. This is actually the same registration as the standard Herpa release however this had the additonal "soccer" nose and additoinal logo towards the rear of the fuselage. One of the first things you can notice with the window line is that it correctly upslopes towards the rear of the fuselage. The Lufthansa titles are correctly placed true to the actual aircraft.

The mould has just been previously discussed with the BWIA A340-300 review and unlike the BWIA this model has some of the details that were requested such as the detailing on the fuselage around the horizontal stabalizer. Hopefully this detail and that of the upsloping winodw line will be presented on all of these Airbus widebody futures, if it can be done there is no reason that it should not be done. The grey belly is correctly placed and is of the correct color and correctly placed.

The nose of the model is well done. The cockpit winodws could be placed just slighjtly lower, however this is very minor and look good as placed. The Star Alliance, Airbus, and city titles are all very clearly printed as you can see. The nose gear is well done and as stated in other reviews lack the glue issues of past batches. The winodw line is straight throughout the fuselage except for the upslope towards the rear. The doors do feature the new additoinal door detail handling which is another great detail added to the model.

Here you can clearly see the upslope in the window line which is a very nice touch. The registration and LH2006 logo are clearly printed and correctly placed. You can also note the additional detailing around the vertical stabalizer which gets another TWO THUMBS UP! The APU exaust is also printed on the rear of the fuselage. This makes a very bland livery that much more interesting. The tail is well done and the crane logo is correctly placed as is the tail number on the top of the vertical stabalizer.

The cockpit winodws as you can see are well done and outlined in silver. The soccer ball however as you can see is clearly printed on probabaly one of the most difficult surfaces to print correctly and Herpa has done an excellent job repliacting the soccerball. The wings as stated previously are well moulded and Herpa has the darker titanium color for the engines. The wings are correctly painted true to the actual aircraft which can be hit or miss with Herpa, however almost all of their Lufthansa releases are well represented.

Final Thoughts

This model had a few additional details which pushed it from good to great. Those added little touches really turned this model into something a bit more special for me. If you can obtain this model from the Lufthansa shop it comes highly recommended!
