Boeing B 727-173C

Introduction

It is operating both, passenger and cargo flights, mainly for the mining industry and humanitarian purposes. Its fleet currently consists of one B 727-100, three B 727-100C and one DC-9-30 (Jan 2005). The model is only available through the Herpa Wings Club.

The Model

It's always nice to see some more exotic airlines being represented in the "small world" and Air Gemini from Angola definitely belongs to that category. Let's start the review with the tail section. The overall shape is well done. The plastic tail itself is correctly shaped. The problem is, though being painted in yellow, it is translucent. Further, the red lines of the elephant logo are a little too thick. The "CARGO" titles should be printed higher on the no. 2 intake. The enines itself are correctly shaped and mounted spot on. The shape of the of the no. 2 exhaust is not correct, as the real one features two little fairings towards the fuselage on both, the upper and the lower side.

The metal wings a well shaped and mounted to the fuselagefrom below, leaving a slight seam visible. The overall shape of the nose is ok, but the cockpit windows are too small. The design itself is well done, Herpa even printed the silver frame of the two side-facing windows. But they are too small.

The overall shape of the fuselage is well done and comes very close to the orginal B 727-100 fuselage. While the yellow color on the fuselage matches the original one very well, the red colors used for the nose section is some shades too light. This partly might be due to the lighting conditions during the photo shoot, but still it shoud be a litte darker. What caught my eye is the yellow color on the tail fin. As you can see, it appears different from the one on the fuselage. It is for sure the same yellow, but due to the plastic tail fin it appears different. Herpa really should get rid of those plastic tails.

Where the tail fin is mounted to the fuselage a slight seam is visible. I leave it to you to make up your mind, whether this seam is acceptable or not. The belly is correctly painted in grey. The white line is painte in the correct position, but it is a little too thick.

The gear is mounted in the correct positions, but too long resultingin the model sitting to high over the ground. This gives the whole model a somewhat strange look in my opinion, especially the nose section. This issue really needs to be adressed by the next retooling of the mould.

Final Thoughts

If you're into exotic airliners aor airlines from africe, this is colorful bird will be nice addition to your cargo fleet and I'm sure, you won't see this model being released from another manufacturer. But the model has it's issues as mentioned above. Some of the are minor ones, but the translucent tail and the gear really disturbs th overall decent impression of the model.
