Herpa ADAC Dornier 328 JET 1:500
Wings900 Model Review Reviewer: Jim Klug Model Photographs © Jim Klug Real Aircraft Photo Courtesy of JetPhotos.net | Airline | Make/Model | Manufacturer | Scale | | Dornier 328 JET | | 1:500 | Introduction | | Producer Fairchield Dornier developed the DO-328, the fastest turboprop regional plane of all times. From an engineering point of view this was brilliant, but the development costs drove Dornier into bankruptcy. Two years after they had stopped production, AvCraft resumed manufacturing the Dornier 328Jet. One user of this jet is the German Automobile Club ADAC.
Product ID: 515078 | The Model | | | A new mould in both 1:500 and 1:200 scale. I must say I think the the Dornier mould is a great choice for Herpa. It is seldom seen in the collecting world and there are enough airlines/RJ operators out there that should keep this mould going for a while. Not to mention Herpa will be able to easily create both the 328 and the 328 JET.
With this first release, Herpa has targeted the German market by selecting to do the ADAC Ambulance operated by Aero-Dienst. If you don't live in Germany or if you are not familiar with German automobile clubs, you won't really recognize or see this plane. So let's see if you should settle for this model in your collection. | | | First of all, please keep in mind this model is small. Being small means that there can be some shortcomings that are overlooked and the pictures you see here can distort the way the model looks when it is in your hands or sitting on your airport.
The shape of the nose section here looks good. The front gear is correctly positioned. However, the gear door and tire could be a little bit smaller. The cockpit windows are a little distorted by the shape of the mould but are much better than the sample pictured on Herpa's web site. The AeroDienst logo below the cockpit is way off - it should be much smaller than this. The 328 between the door should be smaller too and at the same hight as the bottom of the cockpit. The detail on the door would also be nice if it were a mm lower. But remember these details are very small on a small model so if they were made any smaller, it would be almost impossible to see what they were supposed to be.
The wings look good here - even if they are a bit thick. The pylons are also a little bit too thick as well but both are to be expected. | | | Moving on to the back of the model, here we see the rear landing gear. Great job on the gear door and detail, but the position relativeto the windows is off - or is it the other way around? Be that as it may, good job on the gear. The escape hatch right behind the wing illustrates another thing. I think the window line could be moved up a mm. The window in the escape hatch should be a little higher. The cargo door looks good too.
The tail of the plane tapers off like it should and we even the the APU exhaust - Thanks!
| | | One of the more obvious problems with this mould is the wing/body joint. In this picture and in the preceeding ones, you can notice how the wing joint is off here. If there was really something to improve on this mould, I feel it would be trying to improve this part of the model. The tail/body join looks OK.
The rest of the livery looks good. The "ADAC" and "Ambulance" along with the registration/flag look good. The tail section looks good with crisp details and the strobe light up top. The tail section also has the stabilizer winglets under the tail (what are the called?) | | | A little model with plenty of surprises - most of them good and some a little bit of a disappointment. I am really happy to see this model out in 1:500 scale and hope to see some more soon. | |
