The History of Sheremetyevo Airport: The Second Terminal E-mail
Written by Sheremetyevo

On October 1972-construction of a new runway (Runway-2) started. The dimensions of Runway-2-3, 700×60 m (and a strong concrete runway surface 54 cm thick)-enabled operating any sort of aircraft without any limitations. The major and taxiways (22.5 m wide) were radially connected with one another and the runway.

In 1974-construction of Runway-2 was completed. An Il-62 landed on the new runway.

However, Runway-2 did not solve the issue of aerodrome handling capacity. The two runways were connected by just one central taxiway, which dramatically limited the use of the new runway and created additional problems in planes moving across the aerodrome. The air traffic control service had difficulties in managing planes maneuvering on the ground. Therefore, there was a need to speed up the construction process. As early as 1975 the builders already reported the completion of laying concrete for four connecting taxiways. The contractor commissioned the major taxiway to the general contractor in mid-1976. A new method was utilized when building taxiways at Sheremetyevo Aerodrome: laying a single layer of concrete pavement 46 cm thick. Such technology was utilized for the first time in the world in the practice of aerodrome construction.

  • On April 23, 1975 an Il-18 turboprop aircraft was put in the Sheremetyevo terminal square to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the start of its operation on Aeroflot. Over the years of its operation, the veteran of the skies carried over 235 million passengers.
  • Since 1975, Sheremetyevo International Airport has been a member of the International Association of Airports.
  • In the summer of 1977, after installing lighting and radio technical equipment and obtaining positive flight test results, the second runway was put into operation. Runway-2 was equipped for carrying out flights in accordance with the 1st and 2nd categories of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).
  • On November17, 1977, the foundation for anew building for the Sheremetyevo-2 Terminal was laid.
  • In October 1974 at the session of the International Olympic Committee, the organization's Secretary General announced: "The 20th Summer Olympic Games will beheld in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union."

1974 was the starting mark for all enterprises in the capital, and the baton was immediately passed to Sheremetyevo Airport. The airport was ordered to provide for increasing international air service by at least four times by the beginning of 1980. The airport administration and Aeroflot, as the main air carrier for athletic delegations, were made accountable for executing this order.

  • In early 1976 specialists of Aeroproekt developed the Task for Designing a New Sheremetyevo-2 International Air Terminal, which was approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The document was executed with account of all existing requirements and conditions, and with the participation of a foreign contractor. It enabled Soyuzvneshstrojimport, a foreign trade group, to hold an international tender and conclude a contract. 23 bidders from eight countries took part in the tender. On September 30, 1976 the contract was awarded to the Berlin-Consult Construction Firm. In May 1977, because of disagreements with Berlin-Consult, a new contract was urgently concluded with Ruterbau, a company from West Germany.

  • On January1, 1980, on the eve of the 20th Olympic Games in Moscow, the new Sheremetyevo-2 international air terminal was inaugurated. The famous terminal included a passenger air terminal with jet ways, a terminal square, a hotel, an apron with technical services and a number of industrial buildings. The construction of the complex became are birth of the airport. The complex was designed to service 6million passengers a year. Its handling capacity was 2,100people per hour.
  • April 12, 1980-the first flight from Sheremetyevo-2 to Havana.
  • On May 6, 1980the formal opening ceremony of Sheremetyevo-2 Air Terminal took place.
  • In 1980 during the month of the Olympic Games, the airport handled over 460,000 foreign passengers. The organizational committee for the 1980 Olympics highly praised the organization of air service and the quality of passenger services on international flights.
